Managing Employees to Improve Morale and Boost Productivity

Employee Morale Posted by Harrison on Nov 6, 2009  •  0 Comments

Guest blogger Dr. Drew Stephens is sharing his ideas on how executives and managers can contribute to improved morale and productivity in the workplace in this post:

It is amazing how much is written about morale and productivity in the workplace. Prior to the recession, many training firms were using bromide formulas such as rock climbing and white water rafting. Simply put, it did not work. If you take John and Bill white water rafting with a case of beer and they do not like each other, one of them is not coming back. One thing matters when it comes to productivity, and that’s relationships.

People do not leave poor companies they leave bad managers. In my 25 years on this subject my research shows that poor managers contribute to negative morale. Interestingly, in 2006 the Gallup Organization estimated there were 32 million actively disengaged employees costing the American economy up to $350 billion per year in lost productivity. The report illustrates that the poor relationship between manager and employee contributed.

So what is to be done? Easy.

1. Create communication systems. – Adults react positively when there is interactive and engaging dialogue in the workplace. Managers must constantly communicate to personnel, candidly and openly.
2. Create recognition systems – Individuals respond better when there is open recognition or needed correction to work. Condemnation and criticism is not promoting employee output.
3. Passion – All must have it. I am amazed when I visit corporations that emulate a morgue. Organizations should have energy and excitement. This happens in two ways, hiring the right talent and employing leaders with pride and passion.
4. Service Savvy – Customer Service must be exemplified within the strategic operation of the business. Southwest, FedEx and Apple use their employees as service avatars because they understand the importance of internal service. Innovation, passion and productivity heighten when all work tirelessly together.
